Why Take the Risk?
Beverley Paine
Most people think that at best schools educate and socialise children and at worst cause discomfort and bad memories for others... This is not the case. As Linda Dobson so aptly puts in on her Parent At the Helm blog,
It's because it's been my experience that if you bring up the topic of "schooling memories" at any adult gathering, you're likely to elicit schooling nightmares from the vast majority. Successful people who wince with the memory of feeling like a failure; ongoing frustration dreams of being late for class and unable to open the locker; the teacher throwing a piece of chalk and hitting the student on the cheek because she was "socializing" with her neighbor. To date, my "proof" that schooling causes psychic damage that lasts into adulthood has been anecdotal. No more. Now there's a book by an educational researcher.
In her article Schooling Causes Psychic Damage Lasting Into Adulthood Linda highlights the findings by
Dr. Kirsten Olson, author of Wounded by School: Recapturing the Joy in Learning and Standing up to Old School Culture, an educational researcher, activist, consultant, and writer deeply concerned about children, learning, and the conditions of schools. Dr Olson identified lasting major pyschological wounds resulting from people's experiences as school students.
Home educating parent, Bob Collier, produces an excellent monthly e-newsletter called Parental Intelligence which pulls together interesting and compelling articles written by parents, educators and health profressionals. There is something in this e-newsletter for everyone, from new parents contemplating the birth of their first child, or their child's first steps towards preschool or school, to those desperately seeking alternatives from an education system that is damaging their children's chances of happiness, both now and in the future. The articles are thought provoking and hopefully will help to bring about a paradigm shift in how adults view the first 20 years of life and begin to take them much more seriously.
Another regular blog I visit is that of veteran life long learning campaigner Wendy Priesnitz. From here it is short jump and click to the rest of Wendy's important work on promoting human and planet friendly ways of rearing and educating children.
